b According to an article ("Justice, Etc. pg 33) in this month's (dec 1983) Car and Driver, the state of New Hampshire never officially adopted the 55 mph speed limit. This fact has been used in taking cases to many district courts as well as the state's supreme court; and according to the magazine (which refers to the Boston Globe reportage of this issue) the concensus is that 55 mph is not a limit on NH highways. The NH code limits speed to "reasonable and prudent"; judges apparently think that it is reasonable to drive 70 mph on highways designed for that speed; and that reasonable speed doesn't depend on gas saving measures.
