[net.misc] sites doing ocean-related work.

cunningh@noscvax.UUCP (12/07/83)

Two weeks ago, I asked to hear from sites doing work related with the
ocean -- either scientifically or technologically -- and here's a
summary of the replies:

Cindy Paloma (sdcsvax!sdccsu3!zz1cp) tells me that Scripps and
Southwest Fisheries researchers, though doing most of their
number-crunching on VMS systems [and Apollos, and ...], often also have
accounts on various UC San Diego UNIX systems.

Carl Lowenstein (sdcsvax!mplvax!cdl) noted that the UCSD Marine
Physical Lab does various research relating to the propagation of
acoustic energy in the ocean and its uses. John McInerney's recent
announcement in net.news.newsite recently notes that MPL has a strong
multi-disciplinary program of scientific research in marine
physics/geophysics, ocean environmental acoustics, signal porcessing
and ocean technology.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute is on the network, though their
Vaxes run VMS, according to linus!genrad!wjh12!bb.

Rex Sanders (ucbvax!menlo70!sanders or RSanders.Marine @ Denver)
mentioned that the US Geological Survey, Branch of Pacific Marine
Geology will be on uucp soon with 'pmgvax'. They do marine
geology/geophysics and some oceanography research.

Laura Creighton (utscsstat!laura) told me that utzoo does a
considerable amount of fisheries work, mostly with fresh water,
though.

Herbert Gaskill ({allegra,ihnp4,utcsrgv}!garfield!herb) works with
problems associated with icebergs and offshore development. He notes
that there are several groups within the Memorial University of
Newfoundland with interests in the ocean: Newfoundland Institute for
Cold Ocean Science; Ocean Engineering; a physical oceanography group
within the Department of Physics; a group of marine geophysisists
within the Earth Sciences Department.

Maurice Suhre (sdcsvax!sdcrdcf!trw-unix!suhre) mentioned that TRW has a
project on ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) they're working on.

Of couse, the site I'm posting this message from does a considerable
amount of ocean-related research and technology development.

And, I'm sure there's still more sites out there doing ocean-related
work....

[Though I neglected to mention it in my original note, I'm trying to
build a case for uucp/usenet connection of a soon-to-be-bought Vax at
the Oceanography Department of the University of Hawaii. In Hawaii,
extensive ocean-related research is done by the Oceanography Dept.,
the (affiliated) Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Hawaii Institute of
Marine Biology, the NOAA-sponsored Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory,
and the Zoology Department (all UH); as well as several private
laboratories.]

Thanks to all who responded.
