[net.music] Silent Running

D3U@PSUVM.BITNET (01/07/85)

As a fan of cosmic music, I love Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream. Silent run
and One Moment after Transfer are both excellent tracks. However, most Schulze
lps are almost an hour long as opposed to only 35 mins. If you like Trancefer,
I would recommend these lp's: Dune, possibly Dig It but we thought it to be an
attempt to go commercial, Moogetique
these are also highly recommended: X, Live, Timewind, Moondawn
actually, I recommend all Schulze lp's but I didn't list those like Cyborg
which require more patience and quiet
Incidently, Schulze recorded on Tangerine Dream's mindblowing lp Electronic
Meditation, which is hard to find. Released on Ohr in 1970 in Germany
He recorded two lp with Ash Ra Tempel (Ash Ra Tempel and Join Inn, both on Ohr
and reissued later) Ash Ra Tempel was lead by guitarist/ synthesist Manuel
Gottsching and sounded sometimes like Schulze or T.Dream meets PFloyd, Hendrix,
Quicksilver Msgr Service, or Grateful Dead.
Tangerine Dream .... I tend to prefer the less mainstream sounding ones, space
excursions like Alpha Centauri and Atem. Phaedra is great but may be too mechan
ical sounding. Rubicon is recommended to Mike Oldfield fans. Cyclone is good,
but one side sounds like most(?) progressive rock and even has drums and vocals
Force Majeur is a good compromise between exploratory and static (like Stratosf
ear, which had a dance single, or Thief or Exit). White Eagle doesn't have the
magestic rolling soundscapes TD is known for, but is still a good lp. Zeit is
the most meditative and for that reason hard for some to pay attention to)
Alpha Centauri, Atem, and Zeit are the most symphonic or orchestral sounding,
and are taken to be classical music by some. Phaedra has abstract aspects, too.
Rubycon, Force Majeure, and Ricochet are more flowing. Stratosfear and Cyclone
are more like rock. Highly recommended is the double set Encore, recorded live
in USA in 1977, It has classical, romantic, distortion guitar, sequencers.
                           from the Cosmic Ray

ps also recommende are solo efforts by Edgar Froese, TD's leader
I prefer Ypsilon in Malaysian Pale (Floatin symphonic free) and Aqua (watery
and great soundscapes) and Stuntman (sequencers and classical and etc.)
