Anyone out there got any leads on Cabbage Patch Dolls? Anyone care to venture a guess as to their sudden popularity? Does anyone give a hoot other than mild amusement? Could it all be a giant government plot to take our minds off the current world situation?

As to the popularity of the dolls, I heard (On The MacNeill Lehrer News Hour) that the dolls were computer designed such that no two dolls were alike. That and the fact that you "adopt" the dolls may account for their popularity. Allen England at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Naperville, IL ihnp4!ihuxb!alle

In my opinion, the Cabbage Patch dolls' popularity are due to Saturday morning media hype. That's how the Smurfs and Strawberry Shortcake got so popular. David

I think the cabbage patch stuff is a lot of nonsense but I also think it is fairly harmless. I think some people went a little overboard though. I heard that some radio station (as a joke) announced that an airplane would drop the dolls into some stadium and that everyone should go there and hold their credit cards up to the plane which will photograph the cards for billing purposes. Wouldn't you know it, people actually stood out there waiting for the damn plane!! It is interesting to see that dolls can fall into the same catagory as mercedes. The higher the price, the higher the demand. Robert Berlinger {philabs, cucard, esquire}!aecom!naftoli

Well, according to Noah Adams (National Public Radio's All Things Considered anchor), these dolls will, in a few years, wake up in all the houses into which they were adopted, and take over. From there they will attempt to take over the world. These cute little critters are really invaders from another planet, so once you let them into your house, it's all over! I heard the Cabbage Patch Dolls were another attempt by John DeLorean to save his company. Federal agents have reported small amounts of an uncontrolled substance sewn into each doll. The new doll prices have risen to 74.95. o gee wiz tektronix!tekig!david

According to articles in the Los Angeles Times and information presented on the Larry King Show, the cabbage patch doll is created with a computer which generates random features on the doll. The doll can be either male or female, negro or caucasian, and has unique facial features and fingerprints. A child buying the doll has the impression that the doll is her very own because of this uniqueness. Accompanying the doll are a set of adoption papers which reinforce this impression. In addition Coleco mails a birthday card to the owner one year after the purchase. This doll which originally listed for $20 has been sold for over $100 at stores in New York and one person flew to England because he heard a rumor that the dolls were available in London. This coming Friday the Larry King show will auction on radio one doll for charity provided they can find a doll to auction. David Whiteman sdcsvax!sdccs6!whiteman

#R:pyuxa:-40700:cmcl2:4300001:000:433 cmcl2!sullivan Dec 6 12:48:00 1983 Fairly harmless? I have seen TV reports of a shop owner standing on top of his counter with a baseball bat trying to control the crowds. I have also heard from friends who've been silly enough to try and get them that the people push and shove like crazy, making even rush hours on the subways here look tame! People have been pushed -through- display case glass in the crunch. Ugh! David Sullivan ...!floyd!cmcl2!sullivan -- David Sullivan UUCP: ...!floyd!cmcl2!sullivan (212) 460-7287 ARPA: SULLIVAN@NYU

personally, I think I'll start designing Cabbage Patch Computers... no two will be exactly alike, none of them will run any software that runs on any other....Just think, no worrys about compatibility, anyone can hack anything they want, it'll make a million. -- Ken Shoemaker, Intel, Santa Clara, Ca. {pur-ee,hplabs,ucbvax!amd70,ogcvax!omsvax}!intelca!kds

The Cabbage Patch Doll was not hyped on the Saturday morning shows, it has all been a result of tv and newspaper overreaction to a story. The whole thing started about 8 years ago when the originator of the dolls started making them in an Appalachian Folk Art Workshop. The dolls went over fairly well so he and several of his friends bought an abandond(sp) medical arts clinic(or vet Hospital) and started making the dolls. The tv program "Real People" featured the "factory" about two years ago. Coleco decided to get into the business and bought a license to produce the dolls. Coleco has not had to advertise the little rascals as the media has done it all for them. At a 200,000 per week rate of manufacture, the original group is really rolling in the dough. I have seen them go as high as 60.00 per doll just this weekend at Englishtown, N. J.. Put the blame on the whole sordid mess where it belongs folks, the media and parents so hyper about what is the latest that they will go to any length to get their kids the doll. Oh well, tis the season and all that. The Scandanavians have an expression for the season, The Tunnel. That is, with the onset of winter, they go into that long dark tunnel until the light returns in the spring and people do strange things while they are in the tunnel. I guess we are in the tunnel.
