And now the report on the big one day sale -- buy a doll; get a VCR free.

From the Sunday Star-Ledger:

"Early yesterday morning a group of people stood patiently in line
outside an Edison [New Jersey] appliance dealer waiting for a chance to acquire
a piece of merchandise that has made headlines by eluding most holdiay
shoppers. ...
"The 35 in line in front of Tops Appliance City also talked of the
experience they would soon share with other shoppers throughout the nation.
... Yesterday there were no such [violent] encounters, but the store's
management took precautionary measures by stationing an ambulance outside and a
squad of Edison police officers inside."

"I've been trying to find one of these dolls for two months," said
Barbard DuVal, who awakened at 6 a.m. to make the trip in from Staten Island.
"It's funny, but I really wasn't interested in getting the doll until
people started going crazy over them."

"I was going to buy a VCR anyway, and I decided to do it here so I
could get the doll," said Fred Pavia Jr. of Cliffwood Beach, who added that he
was getting the doll on speculation.
His forcasting evidently had merit, because he sold his doll to a
fellow shopper for $100 before he even left the store. ...

Some customers already owned VCRs, but were willing to purchase another
for the doll.

Tops President Lester Turchin said he was able to locate the dolls by
making numerous telephone calls to other retailers throughout the country.
Although he would not say where he got them, he did say they came from areas in
the South and West. ... Turchin said that by 12:30 P.M. every doll and VCR
offered during the one-day sale was gone."

And so it goes...

Has anyone investigated the possibility of volatile addictive chemicals in
Cabbage Patch Dolls? How about subliminals in advertising?
