Majority in ABC Poll Support Abortion

Washington

An ABC News poll released yesterday found that
support for abortion on demand increased during
President Reagan's first term.

Asked whether a woman should be able to get an abortion
on demand if she wants one, "no matter what the reason,"
52 percent of the respondents said yes. Forty percent
supported that position in a poll in 1981, ABC said.

ABC reported that 53 percent of Roman Catholics
supported abortion on demand, as did 50 percent of
the Protestants in the sample.

ABC said the poll, based on interviews during January
18-20 with a random sample of 505 man and women 18 years
and older, had a margin of error of pluse or minus
5 percent.

Eighty-five percent of the respondents believed that
the recent bombings of abortion clinics were "outright
criminal acts," not acts of civil disobedience, ABC said.

It looks like the pro-life people are a bit premature
trying to get legislation to cram their viewpoint down the
rest of our throats.

The first step in anything like this is to get a majority
to agree with you, then the votes will follow. Whatever
the anti-abortion people are doing, they are getting
fewer people to agree with them, not more.
