(Note that I have slightly changed the title.) For many years, it has been a tradition of the Swedish Social Democrats to have the Prime Minister's home phone listed in the Stockholm telephone directory. Of course, the Prime Minister had an unlisted phone, and the listed number was usually unplugged. As the story was told, one of Olof Palme's teen-age kids would monopolize the unlisted phone, and Palme had to make a call. So, on his hands and knees, he plugged in the phone. It rang, of course. He answered it, and reached a somewhat inebriated citizen who would berate Palme for the state of the nation. This happened more than once. Martin Minow decvax!minow
