b The first use of the word "hacker" that I ever heard was in reference to tennis, many years ago. Hacking on the court. I imagine that the word is used with many different enterprises; this indicated by a number of submissions regarding the etymology of the word. Also many years ago (hmmm, have I said this before?), back in the dark ages when I had never even seen a computer, I used to see the symbol -) used in various writings. This meant "tongue-in-cheek", for obvious reasons. I always liked it; it goes well with sarcasm. Mark E. Mallett decvax!sii!mem
