Abortion is very bad as my fellow Sophie has said. Unwanted pregnancy is also bad. Whenever people have sex they stand a chance of producing a pregnancy. Unwanted pregnancy is not thrust upon a woman. It is a consequence of the actions of her and a man. If pregnancy were beyond the control of the wills of individuals, we may have a different situation. On the other hand, the fetus has had no say in its life. Since the nervous system is functioning before the end of the 2nd month - when most abortions are performed - OBG physicians have concluded that the fetus feels the abortion. The fetus is given no anestesia. It is methodically ripped limb from limb, cut and sucked until nothing except perhaps its head remains in the womb. Then a forceps might be necessay to crush and remove the head. Is this the noble cause pro-choicers advocate? No. Is this the effect of the their pro-choice attitude? Yes; but all in the name of humanity and freedom. Matt Noah

Without a 100% effective contraceptive, unwanted pregnancy will always be thrust upon a woman. Abstinance helps, except in the case of forcible rape, but even you (I hope) would not recommend that alternative for married women. They have abortions too, you know. -- Bill Tanenbaum - AT&T Bell Labs - Naperville IL ihnp4!ihlpg!tan

Bcc: Matt Noah discussed the pain that a fetus feels when it is being aborted. Even if I concede that a fetus 2 months old can feel (which I don't), I am much more concered with the much greater amount of pain and suffering which we create for people who have exited the womb. We do know that they feel pain. I believe that if we men spent more time trying to improve our ways of relating to all peoples rather than trying to control women, we would create a world in which there was much less pain for persons both born and unborn. We would create a world where there were far fewer women who would get in situations where they felt that they needed an abortion. Thanks to Melinda for her comments. richard foy
