There was a misprint in the manual. passwd(5) : Hardware Dependencies Series 200/500: The following fields have character limitations as noted: the login name field can be no longer than 8 characters.... The 8 should be a 7. The manual then mentions that the results are unpredictable if you exceed these limits. I believe that this was inherited from the original AT&T System III code and was left there for compatibility purposes.

You didn't mention if you were running the Pascal workstation or HPUX. The Pascal workstation sets no limits as to were you can write. However, you must be sure to write on an even boundary when writing to the graphics memory. I recommend that you use the move.w instruction to write to the graphics memory on an even address. In HPUX, there is an excellent discussion in the latest HPUX manual under GRAPHICS(4). The part-number is 09000-90008. It is a little too involved for me to describe it here.
