[net.micro.hp] Trouble with HP-UX 8-char login name

ericr@hpvclc.UUCP (ericr) (02/04/86)

There was a misprint in the manual.

passwd(5) : Hardware Dependencies

Series 200/500:
The following fields have character limitations as noted:
the login name field can be no longer than 8 characters....

       The 8 should be a 7.

The manual then mentions that the results are unpredictable
if you exceed these limits. I believe that this was inherited
from the original AT&T System III code and was left there for
       compatibility purposes.

You didn't mention if you were running the Pascal workstation or HPUX.
The Pascal workstation sets no limits as to were you can write. However,
you must be sure to write on an even boundary when writing to the graphics
memory. I recommend that you use the move.w instruction to write to the
graphics memory on an even address.

In HPUX, there is an excellent discussion in the latest HPUX manual under
GRAPHICS(4). The part-number is 09000-90008. It is a little too involved
for me to describe it here. This manual was distributed with HPUX 5.01 and
later.
