[net.micro.hp] 82906A assistance plea

spellman@hplchm.HP.COM (Miles Spellman) (09/26/86)

I have an 82906A printer which used to be hpib but has had the
hpib board ripped out to make it centronics and so pc compatible.
It works fine with characters but when I send epsom fx-80 graphics
to it it barfs. I suspect its the dipswitch configuration. Since the
manual has long ago dissappeared its non-trivial to arrive at the
correct setting. If anyone has the switch settings please reply
or send mail to hplabs!spellman .

[ A query about an HP product]

Not meaning to pick on Miles, but it does seem strange that an HP employee
would have to go to the net to find out about an HP product. If HP employees
don't know how to find such (relatively trivial) information internally,
what kind of service does HP provide to its customers? This could of
course be an isolated case, but I'd hate to think of this as a common
problem.

Miles:

The 82906A was was a refitted FX-80. Re-fitted in the ROMs. The
FX-80 ROMs were replaced with HP PCL ROMs. No switch settings or
anything else that you can do (short of changing the ROMs) will fix
it.

Well, I finally got my printer to work like an epson, (new roms). In regard
to John's concerns about trivial info. I think he should realize that this
is a non-hp intended use of the product so its
not really surprising that such info is hard to come by. (sort of like asking
toyota how to install a datsun engine in an old toyota).
