[net.mail.msggroup] "Emily Post for Usenet"; still looking for etiquette documents

bukys@Rochester.ARPA (Liudvikas Bukys) (04/10/84)

Due to popular demand, I have placed the following files in ROCHESTER.ARPA's
"public" directory for FTP by user "anonymous", password "guest".

public/usenet.rules: Rules for posting to Usenet
	public/usenet.emily-post:	Emily Post for Usenet
public/usenet.questions:	Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
public/usenet.style: Hints on writing style for Usenet

Usenet is a distributed bulletin board system running on about 800
machines, in North America, Europe, Australia, and Korea, with a total
of a few thousand users. Discussions are organized by topic in
"newsgroups". The articles listed above were recently posted to the
"net.announce.newusers" newsgroup in the hope that new users, having
just discovered an audience of 1000 people, will learn good manners and
refrain from asking (again) what "foobar" means.

-------

I am still looking for Arpanet mail guidelines for new users.
In particular, I would be interested to know what kind of policy statements
made it onto the record after messes such as the last chain letter incident.

Usenet has at least 10,000 regular readers, an estimate made awhile ago.
Of course, no one (I hope!) attempts to read all the newsgroups.
With over 800 machines your figure of 1000 users obviously doesn't make sense.
