[net.mail.msggroup] Virtual Terminal Protocol

little@dcn5.ARPA (10/18/84)

I am attempting to create a virtual terminal protocol (VTP) with emphasis
on solving problems created by forms mode type terminals (eg-3270). I
currently view the problem with the following breakdown -

		Graphical (Character) Representation
			code for information exchange (agreement)

		Control Domain and Exercising
			modal operation
			transfer requests
			function keys
			out-of-band signals

		Display
			cursor addressing
			end-of-line/screen condition
			presentation attributes

Does anyone have any interesting thoughts or know of problems they are having
in this area?? (or are header/TCPIP/msg people the right people for this sort
of thing?)

Specifically - what problems do you have with TELNET??

Are there deficiencies you would like to overcome with TELNET or RFC 731?

Also, does anyone have access to the new VTP spec put out recently by the
Terminal Repertoire Committee of ANSI (chaired by Henry Lowe -DEC)?

Actually, the WISCNET software that allows you to use TCP/IP to IBM-370
series machines running VM/CMS does this. They have an option negotiation
that says "do 3270 style stuff" and from then on send 3270 control messages.

I have been meaning to try to simulate the user end on UNIX with a termcap
driven user telnet, but haven't gotten around to it.

Msggroup and header-people are both the wrong lists for this topic.

Please, everyone (and especially those of you who we all know know better),
refrain from dumbly copying these two lists on replies, just because
the originator did not know better.

I can understand innocent new netmail users making such an error, but
I cannot understand why knowlegeable people blindly continue?

Thanks for your forebearance, and your consideration. Stef
