By removing SMARTDRIVE and disabling VirtualHDIrq in SYSTEM.INI, I
have finally gotten Windows 3.0 up and running on my Austin 386-20. My sole
significant remaining problem is the inability to run MS Word 5.0 from the
Windows environment IN 386 ENHANCED MODE. The error message comes from
Word, not from Windows, and reads "Not a valid SCREEN.VID". SCREEN.VID is
Word's screen driver, and I, of course, have the correct version in Word's
startup directory. This is confirmed by the fact that I have *no problem*
running Word from the Windows environment IN STANDARD MODE. (The video
system, by the way, is a Paradise 480+ EGA board driving an original issue
NEC Multisynch. The BIOS, if that makes a difference, is a Phoenix 1.10.10,
and I'm running under DOS 3.3.) Windows 3 runs with its own EGA.SYS
installed in the default setting (FUNCT 2A = BCH, as I recall, although I
have no idea what that means. *No* documentation for EGA.SYS was included
with Windows 3).
Any help in getting Word 5 to run under 386 Enhanced mode Windows 3
will be greatly appreciated. And we thank you for your support....
