Anyone know where a good corned beef on rye and potato knish can be gotten in Central Jersey? Quality matters; kosher doesn't. --Bruce Burger {...ihnp4!}hogpc!btb Lincroft, NJ

In New Jersey, the *best* Jewish style but not Kosher restaurant is KARPEN'S DELI in Clifton, near the Garden State Parkway and Route 3. The corned beef and knishes are great; it is really a New York Deli that happens to be in New Jersey. David Seth Green floyd!mhuxi!dsg

Fred and Murray's restaurant moved from Brooklyn to Freehold a few years ago. The food is as good as, if not better than, most Jewish restaurants in New York. I suggest going for dinner, come hungry and try a few things. The mushroom/barley soup is extraordinary, as are the sandwiches and home-made knishes. Also good are vegetable cutlets, noodle pudding, and just about all the full-course dinners. Don't forget dessert. They've recently tripled their seating area, as it's a popular place. It used to be impossible to get in on Friday or Saturday night. They are located in the Pond Road Shopping Center along Route 9 (at Pond Road, about one mile north of the Freehold Circle). The food is STRICTLY kosher although they are not Shomer Shabbos (translation - not closed on Saturday)
