Recently I was asked for information about kosher restaurants in Toronto. I'm posting this with non-local distribution for anyone who may be planning on visiting Toronto. The comments as to quality, etc., are all my own. Downtown there are two places. One is a sandwich counter, nowhere to sit down, at the Adelaide St. exit of the First Canadian Place, between Bay and York. It's called Bagels Galore, and closes at 6 pm weekdays. It's not open on weekends. It's dairy only. The other is the building cafeteria at 26 Wellington East, a block east of Yonge. They are open some weekday evenings. It's called Quality Cuisine. They serve both milk and meat (separately). On the university campus, there's the Lower East Side Cafe, at 604 Spadina. It's run by the university Hillel House (Jewish Student Union). Open 11-2 and 5-7 according to the Jewish Information Service. I haven't been there. There's also the cafeteria at Mount Sinai Hospital if you're at College and University and really desperate. (The food is typical hospital food.) You must ask specifically for a kosher meal. Everything else is up north, mostly along the Bathurst St. strip halfway between Lawrence and Wilson: Mati's - excellent pizza and falafel. Dairy. Le Marrakesh - Moroccan food, good if you like it, although a little expensive. Meat. Maven's - McDonald's style hamburgers, hot dogs, fried chicken, plus other dishes - quite a variety actually. Meat only. They also have parve (non-dairy) soft ice cream and pizza. Delicious if you like fast food. Saturday nights they have live entertainment. Malkat Peking/New York New York - combination Chinese food and regular menu. A little on the greasy spoon side, but it's a sit-down place where you get served. Last time we were there they had a musician playing nice music. Meat. (these are all between Ranee and Baycrest, on Bathurst.) Marky's - on the north side of Wilson, just west of Bathurst. My favourite. Good food, delicatessen stuff, casual (deli) atmosphere, but sit-down with decent service. WARNING: jam-packed Sundays after 5:25 p.m. Meat. Herschel's - on Dufferin north of Finch. Tries to be a fancy restaurant (red tablecloths, subdued lighting). Food isn't bad, but overpriced for the service you get. The owners think they're doing the world a favour by existing, and if you don't like something, that's tough. Meat. The Jewish Information Service (416-635-5600) provides general community information, including information about restuarants, synagogues, etc. Dave Sherman Toronto -- {allegra,cornell,decvax,ihnp4,linus,utzoo}!utcsrgv!dave
