Philip Burton suggest that we may want somewhat of a moderated newsgroup because the volume of messages is so high. Neither I, nor probably Dave Sherman, are willing to impose any rules on this group. It is free to discuss anything that people want to, and can evolve. We can choose to "protest" when somebody steps out of line, or when a topic has proceeded to the point of annoyance (such as the reawakened abortion debate in net.women). My main concern is that we try to focus this group in on topics of general interest about Jews. I don't want to see articles about "basketball" here, but it is perfectly OK to talk about Ernie Grunfeld (an old family friend - we come from the same hole-in-the-ground in Romania). Although this group is moving along at a good clip, it is slower than many existing groups like net.jokes and net.religion and net.flame. New groups often slow down after a while. I don't want to see inflammatory remarks, but do want to see anything that people consider reasonable and interesting to read. I am not sure what Phil is afraid of. I do think it is a good idea to try to finish up some old topics before starting new ones, and I thank him for bringing the synopsis of active topics to our attention. Some of the categories are so broad, that it could take years to finish them. We could even form subgroups to discuss them in. :-) Seriously, I don't mean to put Phil down. I am just disagreeing with his premise. I don't (necessarily) think that the current topics will alienate non-Jews (I have received favorable letters from many of them), and am not worried that people will shut this newsgroup off on some machines. We will probably continue to go whereever net.religion goes. Any other comments? -- -=> Avi E.
