A little more information about kosher restaurants in the Washington DC area: Katz's Kosher Supermarket does not have hashgacha (supervision). The local Vaad HaRabanim (Rabbinical Council) tried very hard to work out an arrangement, but there were certain concessions that Katz's would not make. 1- Katz's sells treife HARD cheeses- not just packaged, but sliced, deli-style. 2- Katz's meat comes from a reliable source, but he refuses to buy separate grinders for kashered and nonkashered meat. (He says many of his customers don't want the added salt but want ground meat) 3-(And this one the Vaad was willing to accept) Katz's sells treife shelf products (cans, packages) like Campbells soup, nonkosher wines, etc. It is very unfortunate that nothing could be worked out in terms of hashgacha, but that's the way it stands. As of now the only place that is under hashgacha is "Metro Kosher," mentioned on the net earlier. It is adjacent to the subway and located in DC. Don't expect high cuisine. Kosher establishments in Washington/Maryland have had very bad luck. If anyone gets tired of the computer field and feels like taking on a real challenge, why not start a pizza place?
