Those of you who (like me) are fond of the Jewish Publication Society translation of the Bible might be interested in a new version (of the Torah only) that includes a "modern commentary". It's apparently an edition intended for synagogue use, as it includes the weekly Haftorah portions and the Hebrew text. (The Torah is the five Books of Moses; the Haftorah is a set of selections from the portion of the Bible known as Nivi'im ("Prophets") that are read each week, just after the Torah portion of the week.) According to the blurb I have here, the new volume includes "explanatory footnotes and essays, bibliographies, gleanings, maps, and index". I'm going to order it; I'll post a review if anyone's interested.

An excellent English translation of the Five Books of Moses is "The Living Torah", by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan, published by Maznaim Publishing Corp. of N.Y. It has excellent footnotes, as well as explanatory pictures and diagrams. The translation is clear and easy to read, and is based upon the explanations of traditional Jewish Commentators. It is aimed at the educated person who wants a comprehensible translation, which is faithful to traditional Jewish sources. It should be at any good Jewish book store or Synagogue gift shop. I highly recommend it. It's available in both hard and soft cover. -- Arnold Robbins CSNET: arnold@gatech ARPA: arnold.gatech@CSNet-relay UUCP: ...!{akgua,allegra,rlgvax,sb1,ut-sally}!gatech!arnold Did'ja ever have one of those re-incarnations?
