[net.religion.jewish] problem with "dialing 1 for mincha"

It's been pointed out to me that on many telephone exchanges,
dialing 1 to shut up the dial tone while you daven doesn't
work unless you daven very quickly - the phone will start
screeching at you and/or telling you to hang up the phone
and try your call again.
