[net.religion.jewish] Oof-roof question

spiegel@mhuxl.UUCP (mit.phoneslave) (03/27/84)

(Background for those less knowledgable than I:
an oof-roof (both vowels are as in look) is a celebration held for a
groom on the shabbat prior to his wedding. (Brevity is leads to
cheaper transmission costs!)

My question: What is the derivation of the custom for throwing candy
at the groom while the poor soul is on the bimah? Anything
interesting would be appreciated. Thanks.

The reason for showering a groom with candy at his ufruf
is to symbolically shower him with wishes for a sweet life.
I've heard that among Sephardim it is customary to throw
flowers. In any event, the candy need not be hard & painful -
many people throw raisins or other soft sweets.
