[net.religion.jewish] Martillo on what other people should find offensive

>You are welcome. You did not quote me completely, but I will give a
>simple definition of what Jews should consider offensive.
>Jews should find offensive the demand or the suggestion that the Jewish

You may or may not have mistaken my article for an actual note of thanks.
It was not. Apparently you are of the school that believes that I, being
of Jewish ancestry, have an obligation to preserve the things that *you*
believe are important---i.e., Jewish heritage, learning, and lifestyle.
I, as an individual, feel no such obligation whatsoever. Those who would
attempt to convince people of their "obligations" to their racial/religious/
ethnic groups (/ancestries/heritages/etc.) are often those who are responsible
for bloody conflict and violent confrontation between such groups. (And
also within them!!) Whether or not those facets of your ideals which I am not
interested in live on is not important to me. Whether or not you and others as
individuals have the right to pursue those ideals in the future IS important
to me. Unless those ideals involve imposing standards on others.

*I* think that the notion that Jews are people like everyone else is a positive
notion that I like seeing in the media, as long as the portrayal avoids (and
preferably debunks) stereotypes. Demanding that an entertainment medium show
(at least) one Jew as a serious student of Jewish learning (from Martillo's
point of view) is as inane as requiring the portrayal of at least one Muslim
as a Shiite, or one Christian as a fundamentalist, etc.
