A few years back, one of the people I worked with told me that he was a 14 year old member of Hitler Youth (or maybe it was the Army) at the very end of WWII. It is certainly nothing he was proud of -- and he never gave any indication in word, deed, or gesture, of anti-semitism. Should I hate him for the accident of birth that made him a German Christian caught by the draft? I felt uncomfortable knowing of his past -- but probably less so than he himself felt -- and sought no more than a casual work-related friendship. But hatred? What good would that serve?
