As some of you may know, on tish'ah b'av (9th day of Av) we read the scroll of eicha (Lamentations, I think). In it a prophet (Jermemiah?) relates all the terrible punishments that will be meted out to the Jews if they don't follow the right path, etc. As I read/studied/recited it today, I realized that not only are the quite graphic descriptions worse than any horror stories anyone can conjur up, but the exact scenario, complete in all its gory details, has actually taken place.
