[net.religion.jewish] Electricity and its use on Shabbes

de@moscom.UUCP (Dave Esan) (09/19/84)

I would like to add my thought on the fire/electricity debate.
Perhaps the forbidding of the use of electricity on Shabbes is not
strictly a law but rather a "geder" a fence to prevent other violations.
If one is allowed to use electricity, what would stop one from, say, using
an electric drill and violating the 39 forbidden labors?
Precedent does exist for this geder -- why does a kid in its mother's
milk forbid the mixing of chicken and milk; obviously a chicken does
not produce milk.

Shana tova.
