Have you thought about building a sukkah this year, and decided it was too hard, and too expensive to buy a prefab? You'd be surprised how easy it is. Note: I am *not* a handy person. Before last Sukkos, I had never built anything in my life. Last year, however, I got the design below from a friend. It took me one (long) evening to construct the panels in the garage, and part of an afternoon to set it up with the help of a couple of friends. (Now that the holes are drilled, setting up will be easy.) Goal: 8'x8' sukkah. I assume you can use your house wall for one wall of the sukkah, where you have a walkout from the house (e.g., from kitchen into backyard). 6 panels, 1/4" Aspenite, 4'x8' each 12 2x3's, spruce, 8' long each (A 2x3 is actually 1.5"x2.5".) 18 2x3's, spruce, 3'9" long each 1 box 3" spiral nails 1 box 1" spiral nails 10 3/4" bolts, 5" long, with nuts |---------------| | | | | | | | | |---------------| | | | | | | | | |---------------| Set up the 2x3's for each panel as shown above, with all of the 2x3's on edge. Use the long nails to hold this rectangle together. Lay a panel of Aspenite on top, and nail it to the frame with the short nails. Presto, you have one wall. Do this until you have 6 walls. Stand the walls up to form the square of your sukkah (get a friend to help), with the plain Aspenite side facing out. Drill two holes for each pair of panels you're connecting, to run the bolts through. Total cost for us last year was under $100, including delivery. If you call a lumberyard, they can cut up the 2x3's to the sizes you need and ship the whole thing out in a day or two. Shop around for prices from the Yellow Pages if you can. Oops, I forgot about the s'chach (roof covering). Get about 15 1x2's, 8' long each. If you lay a couple of them down diagonally, the others can go across straight. Cover the whole thing with bullrushes or fresh cedar. Enjoy. Dave Sherman -- { allegra cornell decvax ihnp4 linus utzoo }!utcsrgv!dave
