[net.religion.jewish] Civilization and the Jews

Since Susan brought it up, let's discuss this series. It appears to
be historically accurate. I was surprised by just how objective a stance
Abba Eban is taking as moderator.

I was disappointed by the treatment of the Islamic period. The Jews who
lived in that time period did not consider it a Golden Age. This was a
term which Graetz invented for political reasons. I am surprised that a
German Jew would think that merely because there was an intellectual
efflorescence among Jews (as there was in Central and Eastern Europe
between 1870-1930), there was no discrimination or abuse of the Jews.
But then Abba Eban's hatred of Sefardim (unless wealthy grandees) is
well know in Israel.

Jewish communities often do very well despited official non-Jewish
descrimination and periodic persecution. Such success is no reason to
credit their non-Jewish masters.

I think I just read a bunch a prayers describing sufferings under the
hand of Ishmael. Of course, Abba Eban does not pray and is only
interested in modern literature and in being current with the latest
intellectual fad.
