[net.religion.jewish] Yet Another Ignorant Question

mcdaniel@uiucdcsb.UUCP (10/22/84)

An aside: I would like to thank the submitters to net.religion.jewish.
Being a non-Jew (are there many Jews named McDaniel? *grin*), I am able
to get some knowledge about something that is very interesting to me
(knowledge of various religions, and theology in particular). As an
extra bonus, there is generally little flaming (unlike, say,
net.religion). It is very pleasant to have such an informative
newsgroup.

The other day, an ignorant question popped into my mind, for no
apparent reason. I have been unable to get an answer locally. Since
someone else asked an ignorant question in here (the Adam and Eve one)
without getting flamed at, I feel safe in asking this one.

I know various other religions' ideas about an afterlife. What are
Jewish beliefs on an afterlife? I'm looking for a kind of finite-state
machine description, sort of: possible states and conditions under
which one changes states, if any. Is there any controversy about this
question?

If I flame, please find it in your heart to forgive my anger.
If I am confused, ignorant, or wrong, please gently enlighten or correct me.
