[net.religion.jewish] Jewish Population Figures

I had the opportunity to consult the old Jewish Encyclopedia (pub. circa
1905) last night. I want to correct my earlier numbers on the Jewish popu-
lation of Poland. The Russian census of 1897 shows the population of the
Russian held portion of Poland (also referred to in the text as Territory
of Vistula) was 14% Jewish.
The concentration of Jews in the provinces of Vilna and Kovno (which more
or less makes up Lithuania) was also 14%.
So these countries had a nation wide concentration of Jews comparable
to NYC or the Miami suburbs. (At least I think the numbers for NYC
and Miami are that high.)
The text states that in the cities the concentration was higher, in rural
areas lower.
BTW, the Jewish Encyclopedia is chock full of great statistics. It's got
a table of the number of Jewish families who applied for charity at
Pesach from 1894 to 1898 in the provinces of Russia, tabulated by province.
Plus tables measuring the degree of destitution in Galicia. And on and on.
