[net.religion.jewish] Kosher restaurants , need help.

stan@hou2f.UUCP (S.GLAZER) (02/13/85)

I could use a pointer to the previous article(s) on kosher
restaurants in San Francisco. Any advice would be helpfull and
appreciated. (I vaguely recall something about a supervised restaurant
in Chinatown.) In addition, does anyone have any advice for keeping
kosher in Maui & Oahu, Hawaii or do I go veggy with canned tuna fish?
I leave on this trip 2/17. As I said before, all help would be appreciated.

There are no restaurants under Hashgacha in the Bay Area. The last one,
Bagel Pastry Bakery and Restaurant closed about two years ago. However, there
are three strictly vegetarian Chinese restaurants in the area. These have
all been checked out by rabbis of orthodox shuls in the area and are all fine
places to eat (I have eaten in all three). Their menus are more or less the
same, they all use no meat, milk or egg products.

My favorite among them is Vegi Food located at 24th and Clement in San FranciscoTheir food is very fresh and served hot (temp.). Their specialty, Fried
Walnuts in Sweet and Sour Sauce is out of this world. They have a branch in
Berkeley at Shattuck and Vine.

Lotus Garden is located on Grant near California in Chinatown itself. This is
the most formal of three, (there are tablecloths, a bar, etc.) but the best
thing about it is that is located in Chinatown itself. As you quickly find
out, Chinatown is a fun place to knock around in, go in a few shops, but most
people go there to eat. They have a large menu, including a few different
Stuffed Tofu dishes. One problem with them was that they do use wine in their
cooking. Now, they only use Kosher wine.

There is one other that I forgot about, called the Shangri-La Cafe. They
also have Dairy products. They are located at 22nd and Irving. I did not
find them as good as the others but it has been a couple years since I have
eaten there.

If you do eat in any of these places please mention that you heard about it
from people in the community that keep kosher. This will reinforce for them
the importance of cooperating with Rabbis who inspect their kitchens.

If you have any questions feel free to write me.
