Summer in Israel Scholarship Program 1985

Go to the Source and Learn from the Sources

Are you intrigued and excited by the thought of spending a summer in
Jerusalem studying the foundations of Jewish knowledge while
experiencing a world where the classrooms have no walls and the lessons
come alive with your every step.

This program is designed for a broad range of students from the --

Mature Beginner who has little or no background in Judaic
	Studies to ...

Advanced Students who have a fundamental background but wish to
refine their learning and textual skills and to deepen and
	broaden their knowledge.

The program includes a wide spectrum of Judaic Studies taught on various
levels and from a traditional perspective:

	Jewish Philosophy TANACH (Bible)
Ethics and Values The Jewish Life Cycle
	Concepts of Mitzvot Jewish Holidays
	Meaning of Prayer Daily Tutorials
	Talmud/Aggada Independent Study
	Jewish Law Daily Hebrew Ulpan

The day is divided into different parts which provide for independent
preparation, tutorials, lectures, classes, and review sessions. With
the guidance of teachers and tutors, the student learns to analyze texts
in the original Hebrew and develops a method of "learning how to learn."

An important key to each person's development is a staff of outstanding
scholars whose personal involvement with students on a daily basis
extends far beyond class hours.

Classes are taught in English.

University academic credit is available for these courses.

This program is approved by the Government of Israel.

Residence for participants will be in dormitories and neighborhood
apartments.

Extra-curricular activities include student musical groups, dance,
creative arts workshop, and volunteer work with the needy.

Sports available include swimming, basketball, jogging, baseball,
soccer, and volleyball.

				 Tours

An integral part of this Israel summer experience is the schedule of
tours and visits to sites and areas of historic and natural interest.
The goal of the tours is to dig below the landscape to uncover the spark
which has drawn Jews "home" throughout the centuries.

Special emphasis is placed on appreciating the essence of Jerusalem.
Frequent walking tours led by native Jerusalemites lead the students to
discover the fabric of the city, its paths, its courtyards and its
people.

Day-long excursions and multi-day visits to various parts of the country
provide the student with a first-hand knowledge of the Land of Israel
while at the same time serving as an opportunity for relaxation and
appreciation of the beauty of its geography.
