                       Aegean Society

Statement of purpose:

At a time when racial and religious divisions and ethnic identities
have come to dominate and direct national political policies in the
Eastern Mediterranean region , we feel that the formation of a
polyethnic , transnational society on Cornell campus is an important
step . We hope to combat the prejudice which exists on this campus
between national groups from the area and to promote the sort of
activities which will foster mutual understanding .

Specific aims :

1. We plan to provide a forum through lectures and discussion to address
some of the contemporary and historical problems relevant to all
peoples of the area .

2. We plan to sponsor cultural events such as concerts , folk dancing ,
film screenings and poetry readings which will stress both the common
heritage and the wealth of variety of the cultures of the area .

3. We aim not to duplicate the activities of other ethnic organisations
on the campus but to support all those activities relevant to the region
of the Aegean which has traditionally been a polyethnic society .
