As the chairman of the Search Committee, I am writing to request your assistance in identifying a person to fill this important position. .pp The University of Florida is a land-grant university with over 35,000 students enrolled. The Department of Computer and Information Sciences is an inter-college department offering degrees through the Colleges of Engineering (B.S., M.S., and Ph.D.), Liberal Arts and Sciences (B.S. and M.S.) and Business Administration (B.S. and M.S.). Administratively, it is housed in the College of Engineering which has an extensive research program that is ranked among the top 15 of the nation's approximately 250 engineering schools in terms of annual research expenditures (Ref.: .b Engineering Education, .r ASEE, March 1985). .pn 2 .he ' ' 'Page %' .pp Our rapidly expanding department now numbers sixteen doctorate faculty (five full professors, three associate professors, and eight assistant professors). This number is expected to grow significantly during the next few years. Presently, the department has approximately 800 undergraduate students and a rapidly expanding graduate enrollment of 130. It has well-funded research programs in image processing, database management, digital systems, distributed and parallel computing, software engineering, and information systems. The department and most other College of Engineering computer-related research and academic programs will soon occupy a new 50,000 square-foot building, with ample space for future expansion. The department has tremendous growth potential and provides an excellent opportunity for the new chairperson to direct and shape its future development. .pp Department facilities include a Gould 32/8780 (4.2 C BSD UNIX), four VAX 11/750s (4.2 BSD UNIX and VMS) supporting CSNET, two IBM Series/1, three APOLLO workstations, and numerous smaller computers. A local area network provides access to all computer systems through the College of Engineering. Students and faculty also have easy access to two DECNET interconnected VAX 11/750 computers operated by the Center for Instructional and Research Computing Activities, a facility operated through the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The University of Florida is the site of the Northeast Regional Data Center of the State University System; the facilities available through this Center include an IBM 3081D with 32 megabytes of main memory running under MVS and a newly installed IBM 3090 system. .pp Living in Gainesville is very desirable. Residents can enjoy the natural beauty of the State (lakes, rivers, springs, beaches on both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, forests, etc.), the year-round outdoor activities (fishing, golf, tennis, hiking, swimming, scuba diving, etc.), the low state sales tax, the zero personal state income tax, and plenty of sunshine and southern hospitality. The benefits also include the intellectual stimulations and cultural activities offered by a university city such as Gainesville. .pp The qualifications for the position include an earned doctorate in computer science/engineering or a related field and the ability to provide strong leadership for research and academic programs. This person should also qualify as a senior-level department faculty member. Appropriate administrative experience is desirable. The chairperson will hold a twelve-month appointment beginning on or about August 1, 1986. Salary will be commensurate with rank and qualifications. Qualified applicants should send their resumes and the names of three references to: .sp .in +10n .nf Stanley Y. W.
