[micro] telephone electronics book review

<> At last a book I can recommend on the telephone system. It is
UNDERSTANDING TELEPHONE ELECTRONICS by J. L. Fike, G. E. Friend,
et al and from the Texas Instruments Learning Center. I got it
for $3.49 from Radio Shack (Cat. No. 62-1388) and I'm not sure if
it was on sale or not. It's 288 pages, about 5" x 7".
Chapter titles:
1. The Telephone System
2. The Conventional Telephone Set.
3. Electronic Speech Circuits
4. Electronic Dialing and Ringing Circuits
5. A Microcomputer in the Telephone
6. Digital Transmission Techniques
7. Electronics in the Central Office
8. Network Transmission
9. Modems - Telephone Service for Computers
10.Wireless Telephones
"Conventional telephone fundamentals, analog and digital electronic
principles, newer digital techniques and hardware implementation
are covered ..."
It is well written, and while one of its purposes seems to be to
tell people about TI's ICs in this area, it does cover most aspects
of the telephone system. The emphasis is on the electronics, but
you really don't have to know much about electronics to follow the
discussion. It is much more on the conceptual level, and the system
aspects, than on the details of wiring, etc. I.e., it won't give you
step by step instructions on how to wire your house or fix your
telephone set.
I think it is a good book for someone who wants to find out more
about the telephone side of digital data communications.
