[net.veg] Animal Use in Education

For those who are vegetarians because you abhor the killing of animals:

I'm just curious as to your views on the use and dissection of animals
in education and research. All college level and most high school level
biology courses require some dissection and prosection. If your major
or some other college rule required you to take such a course, what would
you do?

Or do you view it as being in the same league as Gross Dissection Anatomy?
(of the human cadaver.) Of course, in the case of animals, they are killed
for the research and the humans are not (I hope!).

I can see that some courses could do without actual dissection, by substituting
photos, drawings and lecture gathered previously. But in the case of medical
school, that wouldn't be sufficient. Even though in nursing school, the only
pre-human practice for administering shots is on an orange (once), I wouldn't
want that to be the case for more critical medical procedures.

If you are against all such research practices, what would you suggest
interns practice on?

                      Just Asking,
