I'd like to put in a plug for a very dedicated group of people working for
animal rights: The Farm Animal Reform based in Washington, D.C. For those
of you not familiar with this group, here's some background information:

o sponsor the World Farm Animals Day
o sponsor the Great American Meatout (to compete with the meat industry
attempt to sponsor a week dedicated to meat eating)
o sponsor the continuing boycott against veal. They've been very successful
in this area, especially in Massachusetts
o are in the process of beginning Project Sheepdog which will attempt to
inform the public about the introduction of a new lamb slaughtering
industry in Virginia (a potential for the slaughter of 1/2 million lambs
   per year)
o had a counter-inaugural luncheon to protest Reagan's luncheon menu which
   featured veal
o constant lobbying for animal rights
o constantly getting media attention for animal rights by appearing on radio
and television talk shows, placing ads in newspapers, distributing leaflets

I've personally spoken to the president and founder of this organization,
Dr. Alex Herschaft, and I can attest to his and his staff's dedication
towards their goal:

"To alleviate and eliminate animal abuse and other adverse impacts
  of animal agriculture"
