[net.veg] Portable foods for special diet

ir524@sdcc6.UUCP (ir524) (08/27/85)

I need suggestions for portable, eg. snacks and lunch, foods which will
conform to a very strict diet designed to limit ingestion of potential
allergens. In general the diet restricts one to strictly fresh or un-
processed foods. The emphasis is to eliminate all sources of yeast.
Restricted items include bread, cereals, sugars and all other processed
foods. This seems to limit protein sources to simply prepared meat and
boiled eggs.

Any suggestions ould be appreciated via email.

Protein sources do not have to be limited to meat and eggs. There
are a wide variety of alternatives. There is tofu, milk, yogurt, and
the proper combination of whole grains, nuts, legumes with milk, etc.
Two very good books using such recipes are Nikki and David Goldberg's
Wholefoods Cookbook (not sure on the exact title) and a book by the
New York Times, _Natural _Foods (or something like that). These books
also have recipes that use little or no sugar (honey, molasses, brown
sugar) and they use whole grains and 'natural foods'. Some recipes for
muffins may be useful to you because they do not contain yeast and they
are portable (as well as delicious!).

unless i misunderstand your meaning: almost all fresh fruit is very portable.
many health food stores will have decent dried fruit without all the additives
(i've gotten some excellent Turkish apricots) and yet not be a horrible brown
color. burritos and chappatis (esp good shelf life) are without yeast.
check out pocket bread. beyond meat and dairly products, legumes are great
protein sources and very portable (just need a good cooker on the other end).
