[net.veg] The Great Peace March

jlmalito@drufl.UUCP (Jeanine L. Malito) (01/29/86)

Are all vegetarians peaceful?
I doubt all, but i would guess many.

With this in mind,
i decided to share news of my adventure with the readers of net.veg.
(Perhaps since i'm a vegetaian, we can call this a vegetarian adventure.)
So ...

I'm going on The Great Peace March across the united states!

For those of you who haven't heard of it, the plan is for 5000 people to
walk from LA to Washington DC (3235 miles) in 8-1/2 months, living in a
tent city along the way. We'll be walking 15 miles per day, 6 days per
week; wearing out many pairs of shoes. The march starts March 1st,
although people from my region "report" on 20 february (my 27th birthday!).

The march is organised by PRO-Peace (People Reaching Out for Peace),
"an international, non-partisan, citizens movement with a single goal:
global nuclear disarmament" (a pretty big goal, wouldn't you say?).

(Okay, now for the hard part...)

Each marcher is financially responsible for their cost in the march,
approximately $1 per mile, that is $3235. I will also be responsible
for personal costs - cloths (shoes!), insurance(s), storage fees, loan
payments, toothpaste ...

My goal is to raise, through donations, my cost to the march. Since
the money goes to the march, it is tax deductible (at least in the
united states). I am contacting friends, as well as organisations.

If anyone is interested, or knows of an organisation that might be
interested, please contact me. Cheques can be made out to PRO-Peace,
with "for jeanine" written in a corner.

(Okay, enough of that ...)

If anyone is interested in more information, i'd love to tell you about it.

And, if any of you are interested in joining the march for a time, they are
accepting part-time marchers for a minimum of 2 weeks. Let me know, or
contact PRO-Peace or a local peace organisation.

i'll be at work, and on the net, until 7 february.

peace to all,
jeanine
