CONTEXT: People are asking what has been happening to their favorite net personalities. Here are a few answers: I just heard from Andy Tanenbaum (masscomp!trb) a few days ago, and he just submitted an article to net.religion.jewish yesterday (Friday, by my reckoning). He is definitely alive and well -- and busy. Valerie Polichar (Lady Arwen, sdccsu3!arwen), is also alive and well and keeps in touch by mail. Tim Maroney (unc!tim) has had his mail and news privileges removed, as has been published elsewhere. I hope he gets a chance to return. He is one of my personal favorites, even if we do disagree at times. Laura Creighton (utzoo!laura -- new address) has already announced her ressurection in a previous article. She, too, is very busy. The bottom line is that it is expensive to remain as a "personality" for very long. After a while, you get drowned in personal mail -- whether or not you watch what you say. Personalities often take vacations when the pressure gets to be too much, or people at work suggest they start earning their salary. Since all the above AI projects are human, it is understandable that they take a break. Instead of lamenting the good old days, why don't we forget about developing a Hollywood-style personality cult, and just submit [interesting] articles of our own. -- -=> Avi E.
