SUNYA PROGRAMMING CONTEST - CONTEST RULES
1. Contest is open to undergraduates enrolled for a normal course load
at any four-year institution. Part-time students, faculty, and
graduate students are not permitted to participate.
2. Students are to be enrolled in teams of four. A team may contain
less than four members, but no special allowances will be made for
teams with less than four members. An alternate may be specified
for a team, but may only participate if there is a vacancy on the
team.
3. Credit for a program will be given only to programs written in
either C or Pascal.
4. Any reasonable programming tool (such as a book, calculator,
flowchart stencil, etc...) may be used to solve the problems. In the
event that there is a disagreement over what is meant by "reasonable,"
the judge shall make a decision which is final.
5. No points will be deducted for incorrect submissions. However, the
time for a given problem will be the time that it was submitted and
yielded the correct results. The winners will be based on the number
of correct submissions. The second criteria for judging is then based
on the least amount of accumulated time to solve the problems (in
other words, the total of the times that the problems were submitted
and ran correctly.)
6. The three teams with either the most correct solutions or the lowest
times will be the winners. First, second, and third prizes will be
given out accordingly.
7. The contest shall officially start at 11:00 A.M. and end at 4:00 P.M.
Other regulations regarding the time will be announced during the
announcements on the day of the contest.
8. Aides will be available throughout the contest to help with any
system-related problems. They will also inform contestants of the
judges' rulings and will distribute line printer output. Aides can
help with any problems that a team may have in:
a. The Editor
b. The Operating System (commands entered at '$' prompt)
c. Any error messages generated by the Pascal compiler (to
the best of their ability). Note here that aides may explain
what an error means (if they know), but may not explain how to
correct it. Aides cannot look at any program text, comment on
it, or attempt to help with any logic problems.
d. The VAX Pascal or VAX C manuals will be available for
consultation.
9. Contestants are encouraged to make every use of system-specific
routines and utilities explained in the contest documentation. It is
not permitted, however, to use any other system routine or utility.
Use of this code for any reason is grounds for disqualification from
the contest. Should a team accidentally mistype a command and enter
into one of these utilities, it is their responsibility to contact an
aide immediately and have the problem remedied.
