[net.consumers] nut and bolt assortments

wct@mordor.UUCP (Bill Thompson) (02/09/84)

I have one of the nut and bolt assortments in question.
The nuts and bolts are not bad quality though not as good
as you would find in a good hardware store that doesn't
sell them in little plastic packs. In any case, I would
rate them "usable".
However, I got my assortment from J.C. Whitney,
P.O. Box 8410, Chicago, Ill., 60680 for only
$9.95 + shipping (see their catalog for details--
for those of you not familiar with J.C. Whitney--
they are a mail order auto parts place).
Up until last October their price has been the usual
19.95 -- since then they seem to have been on a
continuous sale for 9.95. They seem to be the same
as sold by D.R.I.--the usual mail order offering.

I bought an "assortment" a few years ago (it was mail order,
not Sears, etal.) and found that many of the parts were of
odd sizes. Big, fat, short screws. Strange shaped nuts.
Weird heads on some of the screws or thread sizes with no
matching nuts. It looked to me to be out of some manufacturer's
unsold stock barrel. So I recommend caution. If you can examine
and return the kit if not satisfied, that should be be safe.

:
I have a simpler way to get the hardware I need. Whenever I do
a project, I overbuy (how much depends on price) a little. It
doesn't take long to build up a collection of the stuff you use
most.
