We rented a Chevette from Alamo for a week in Miami two years ago. I was happy enough with the car. They didn't give us half a tank to start with; they gave us a virtually empty tank, and told us we'd get no credit for gas we brought back. I prefer the full-tank routine, since you don't have to play guessing games about how much gas you're going to use towards the end of your rental. The lineup for picking up the car was incredible. We came in on December 25 , a busy time of year, which was obviously part of the problem. But I would have liked to see more staff working. It took up almost three hours to get our number called! This time around (two months ago) we rented from General, again for a week in Miami. I liked them a lot better. They give you a full tank and ask you to bring it back full. We went half a day over our one-week period, and they didn't charge us anything. Also, they told me that if they did charge us for extra days, it would be at the same rate we paid for the week, pro-rata (since we paid Cdn$58, or under US$47, for the week with unlimited mileage, that's pretty cheap). On the whole, therefore, I prefer General but wouldn't go as far as to say "stay away from Alamo". The time of year (i.e., Xmas week vs. a quite week towards the end of January) probably made a big difference in both attitude and service.
