I posted the following to net.wanted, and was advised to post it to
net.consumers, so here it is. Sorry if any of you have already seen it.

----------
I have this problem and I am hoping that someone out there can give me
some advice:

Last Thursday I purchased a Hitachi television (Model 19Z7 - remote control,
105-channel cable ready) from Drucker Discount Warehouse in Morristown, New
Jersey. I almost bought a Sony model KV-1918 (no extra features) from a
different store, but I bought the Hitachi because of the extra features.

Well, I got the tv home and found out that not only can't I receive HBO
without the cable box supplied by the cable company, but I can't even get
all of the cable channels because the tv channels go up to 36, while the
cable channels go up to 54. I know now that I should have found these
things out before I bought the tv, but I didn't.

Now I want the Sony KV-1918 that I had almost bought, so I went back to
Drucker's. Well, the manager told me that the store's policy is not to
give refunds or exchanges on TVs, but because of my cable problem he would
let me exchange the set for a different one. The only problem is that the
store does not and can not handle Sony TVs. I can get any Hitachi set there,
but I would really like the Sony, and I don't like the idea of being forced
to buy a particular brand of TV.

Does anybody have any ideas for me? Is there any way that I can make the
store give me a refund? Like I said before, I purchased the set only five
days ago.

Another solution would be if I could find someone who wanted to buy a Hitachi
tv set. I can exchange my set for any Hitachi that you want. I will even
give anyone who will do this for me $20 off the price. This would be a
brand new, unopened tv, with all warranty cards, etc. The only catch is that
the receipt would have my name on it.

I would appreciate any advice or offers quickly, so that the store will still
make the exchange (or refund if anyone can tell me how I can get one).

Thanks,

In this situation I would recommend that (having discussed your problem with
the store personnel, and not gotten satisfaction) you call directory
assistance and ask for the Consumer Affairs number in the Morristown area.
They will give you the most reliable information on what your alternatives
are.
