[net.consumers] Caffein Content of Tea - explanation

rcj@burl.UUCP (R. Curtis Jackson) (04/09/84)

The misconception comes from these two FACTS -- both are true:

1) Coffee has more caffeine than tea.

True -- a cup of your average coffee contains much more caffeine than
a cup of your average tea.

2) Tea has more caffeine than coffee.

True -- X grams of raw tea leaves contain more caffeine than X grams
of coffee beans. I believe that it is the grinding of coffee beans
which presents more surface area to the water that makes this
seeming contradiction possible.
