[net.consumers] Dubious deals through the mail

I read somewhere that the laws against mail fraud had been beefed up to
make them more practically enforceable, and that the U.S. Postal service
inspectors were anxious to use them. So I would say turn over anything you
get that seems funky to your local postmaster. I even saw an ad in the
paper from the Postal Service saying they were anxious to help.

(Specifically, I think the law now requires that anybody who offers
something for sale through the mail must also provide it at the same price
if you knock on their door with cash in hand. This means the postal guys
don't have to wait for weeks to prove that the stuff is junk or
non-existent. Also, the courts can now issue permanent injunctions against
people telling them never to sell miracle carburetors UNDER ANY NAME OR
COMPANY NAME, FROM ANY ADDRESS. They can still change P.O. boxes and start
selling baldness cures, but pretty soon they'll be put out of that
business, and pretty soon they'll be out of profitable businesses. It used
to be they just had to change company names, get a P.O. box down the road,
and continue selling miracle carburetors.)
