The large chain department stores are *very* conscious of customer
relations, and so are willing to take returns on things even when
they were bought years ago. Eaton's and Simpson's in Canada work
the same way.

My wife was in Eaton's a couple of weeks ago, and a lady was trying
to return some shoes. The store clerk was very apologetic, and explained
that they would be able to take the shoes back if they could go back
into stock, but that they hadn't sold this line of shoes for SEVEN YEARS.

On the other hand, I've returned (unused) clothes, shoes, etc.,
a year or 18 months after buying them. The clerks usually mutter
about the date and make you feel low, but they never refuse to take
the item back.

not related to VCRs, but here goes:

A friend bought a cheapo digital watch, the warranty said
that if it broke, just mail it in with $5 and they would
fix/replace it.

Thing is, the watch only cost $3 !

I doubt if they get very many warranty claims.
