[net.consumers] Advice wanted on electric shavers

cbf@allegra.UUCP (Francois) (04/19/84)

I'd like to buy an electric shaver, and would appreciate any
thoughts (pro or con) on the various brands around, or just a
reference to a Consumer Reports feature on those products. I'd
also welcome any opinions on the relative merits (if any) of
electric razors over disposable blades.

Please reply to me, and I will summarize to the net should the
feedback warrant it. Thanks in advance.

Some of us use shavers for religious reasons. (Cutting one's beard
with a knife (==razor) is prohibited in Jewish law; cutting it with
scissors (==shaver) is permitted by most rabbinic authorities.)

If REAL men don't shave (except with chainsaws, rototillers, etc),
then perhaps Gillette should market....

Shaving is perhaps the most time consuming acts of personal hygiene
there is for some men. I have a dark, fast-growing beard that only
looks good if I use a blade. Electrics leave me with a dark shadow
at noon. By growing a beard and trimming once a week, I save at least
ten minutes a day. Btw, I recommend shaving in the shower. The beard
is softer and gives a closer shave. Of course it takes some practice
w.o. a mirror.

I've got essentially the same problem and agree with the idea of shaving
in the shower (even though it grots up the floor)
Although I use a blade for most shaving, I also have a Mr. Whisk that
a) is rechargeable and seems to keep a good charge.
b) although electric allows the use of shaving foam/soap and immersion
to a depth of three feet of water...
I've tried several electric shavers in the past - because this one allows
the use of water while shaving, it has been the only one I've liked.

As one who must use both a blade and an electric for a
uniformly smooth long-lasting shave (no remarks about
neanderthals, please), let me offer a testimonial
 for Panasonic's Mr. Whisk -- a battery operated small-sized
portable, perfect for travel and a quick touch-up job on
the way from work to the evening's social function.

This unit costs less than $30, and has an excellent blade
arrangement that seems to be fairly durable. Two AA cells
probably last 2-3 weeks if you use this unit for a full shave.
