[net.consumers] Microwave Info Wanted

bjjb@ihuxl.UUCP (Betty Hodge) (05/05/84)

Does anyone have information about the recent incidents of microwave
ovens coming on by themselves. I was told that a television program
(about a month ago) told of these incidents.

Is there any particular brand name (s) or feature(s) associated with
this? I am considering purchasing one and would appreciate any
information. Please reply by mail.

Some microwave ovens have all electronic controls, and some have
electromechanical controls. The all-electronic models, which
are controlled from a keypad, are the only ones susceptible
to this type of behavior. Some Amana and Litton models are
available with mechanical knobs to control the duty cycle (cook
control) and time settings. These models might be a better bet
if you're concerned about this problem. My Sears microwave
has electronic controls, but I've had no difficulty with
it starting up by itself. Maybe it was just one model in
particular that had the problem.

I saw the original report on a local Chicago station.
There has been no followup to that report, indicating
specific name brands involved.

I'm not worried, as the problem appears to exist only
in microwave ovens equipped with completely electronic
controls. My Tappan has an electromechanical on/off
switch besides its programming keypad.
