[net.consumers] Extended Warranties

dave@utcsrgv.UUCP (Dave Sherman) (05/10/84)

I consider extended warranties on appliances to be a Good Thing.
We don't have a VCR, so I can't comment on that, but we have always
renewed our annual service contracts on our appliances.

For this year we paid about $130 for service on five 1-year-old
appliances (stove, washer, dryer, dishwasher, microwave). Recently
I set our self-clean oven on fire (well, putting a pizza box in on low heat
*usually* works!). When the self-clean didn't clean the inside properly,
Camco (==Canadian General Electric) came and replaced the ENTIRE
inside of the oven. Needless to say it would have cost far more
than the $30 we paid to insure service on the oven.

If you do not have extended warranties you tend not to get things fixed,
figuring you can live with them. I prefer to pay up front and have the
satisfaction of knowing the item will be in perfect condition.
