I'm looking for information on stabilizers/enhancers/etc. I'm especially interested in VIP's Hybrid 8 and the MFJ 1445 but any information on any machine would be appreciated. The main thing is: do they do what they claim? -- Jay Elvove ..!seismo!umcp-cs!jay

Video stabilizers are basically Schmitt trigger circuits which clean up the synch pulse. If you're a non-technoid type, the synch pulse is a periodic signal transmitted between frames of the picture to keep the picture from rolling. The principal use of such a device is to defeat "Copyguard," an anemic attempt by the home video industry to prevent copying of prerecorded video tape. They work. Video enhancers are basically linear expanders which improve picture detail and prevent color dropouts by reinforcing the chroma burst signal. They also work, to a degree, but you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. I don't have either of these devices, so I can't comment on use or recommend brands. However, I've had pretty good success taping without them. -- Bob Fishell ihnp4!ihu1g!fish
